Human, construct, or AI?

H means an embodied human, including augmented people and biological clones. C means a recorded, retained, or programmed personality. A means a machine intelligence.

H → C marks a transition within a novel. H + C marks a living person and a digital double. C / A? explicitly marks a boundary case. Selecting either relevant type includes a mixed-status character.

The matrix loa are marked A as a technological reading of the fiction. Their religious meanings within the novels are part of the interpretation, not something this label settles.

Aliases, copies, and similar names

Molly and Sally Shears share a node. The Sally in Count Zero is a different person. The adult Paco and Virek’s child-shaped Paco subprogram are distinct, linked manifestations. Gerald and Prior are separate people. Wintermute borrowing a face is not the same as that human becoming an AI.

What the links claim

Each link is a curated narrative relationship, not a measure of how often two names appear together. Some links describe coercion, memory, or machine lineage rather than a personal meeting. Select a character, then open a connection for its claim and source location.

This is a curated atlas of principal characters, supporting actors, and consequential digital entities. It is not an exhaustive list of every named person. “Across the trilogy” tracks the eleven identities with entries in more than one book; select a novel for its broader cast.

How to check a reference

References use your supplied Markdown files. Neuromancer has numbered chapters. Count Zero has irregular headings: its “Source §” labels are file sections, not asserted published chapter numbers. Mona Lisa Overdrive uses section titles; line numbers distinguish repeated titles.

Descriptions are paraphrases. The novels themselves are not bundled with this page. File fingerprints and line counts are included in the downloadable data so references can be checked against the same copies.
